dagger - if it's called a knife or a dagger
this is what skill it uses.
heavy sword - if it's a two-handed sword and not a katana this is what it uses.
sword - if it is a sword and not one of the above, this is its skill.
axe - if it's an exe, this is its skill
mace - if it's a mace this is its skill. A mace is a stick, generally with a weight on the end. Thus hammers, short canes etc. fall in this category too.
flail - if it's described as a flail or it's a stick or sticks with a chain, then this is its skill
polearm - it it's a long stick, possibly with a spike or blade at the end, then this is its skill. Spears, staves, scythes, halberds, partisans, all fall in this category.
misc - if it isn't one of the above this is its category.
That, basically is it. We don't propose coding this into a command because it's the kind of information that we don't put into commands. It's player knowledge, like which weapons, armours etc. are effective.
